February 2016 Workshop - Valentines

This month our "workshop" had a purpose other than book arts. Lorraine Miller-Wolf had us prepare Valentine cards for the Senior Nutrition Program home delivered meals, participants at the senior lunch sites, kidney dialysis patients and people living in our local board and care homes.

Lorraine brought some supplies and the rest of us did too.  Some of us had already made cards at home. We then spent the next several hours making Valentines. Here are the pictures. Need I say more?

Valentine Display

NORBAG Valentine spirit is now on display in the kiosk at the Humboldt County Library. It is always wonderful to see the wide variety of exchange cards produced by our members and now everyone who visits the library can experience this show of creativity from previous years. 

We would like to thank the Humboldt County Library for allowing us to maintain the displays in this kiosk, Lynne G for arranging them, and Dolores G for providing the photographs used here.

Valentine Making with Lorraine Miller-Wolf

Please join Lorraine on Saturday, February 13th for an afternoon of making beautiful, original valentines. This will be the 11th year that Lorraine has spearheaded this project. Let's try to help her break last year's record of 824 valentines that she gave to people receiving the Senior Nutrition Program home delivered meals, participants at the senior lunch sites, kidney dialysis patients and people living in the local board and care homes.

Feel free to bring your own supplies (suggestions are listed below). Lorraine will provide card stock, stickers, etc. for your use...along with some munchies! This is a perfect way to celebrate Valentine's Day by sharing your creative talents with people who will definitely appreciate the cards they receive from you. If you are unable to come to the workshop but would like to contribute cards please contact Lorraine. Her phone number and email address are in the February newsletter.

• PVA glue or glue stick

January NORBAG Workshop

In January, our workshop taught us about a Leporello structure.  Instead of a single piece of paper folded as an accordion/concertina, you have separate folded sections glued to each other to form an accordion fold that is not limited by the length of a single piece of paper. 

According to Imago.co.uk: "Steeped in history, this binding technique takes its name from Don Giovanni’s manservant, Leporello, in Mozart’s famous opera.   A notorious lothario, Don Giovanni seduces so many women that when Leporello displays a tally of them all, it unfolds concertina-like across the stage, as a list of considerable length!"

Sounds quite elegant and posh. Not so for this workshop. Margaret B. from the UK sent us an exchange book that is brightly colored and exuberant. Since Margaret is in the UK, Dolores did the workshop.

Things started neatly. We started by picking five papers of different colors to make the cards.

Then things started getting a little out of hand when we started adding scrap paper and punches for the surface design.

Then the tables exploded with color.

In the bottom right, you can see that the covers were folded in half and that was the base unit used in the Leporello.

We made a WOW fold in a different color and added it to the folded card.

By the way, here is a picture of Ellen G. who takes and posts all of the photos of the exchange books on Flickr. She is taking pictures while the rest of us are at play in the workshop! Newport Paper and Book Arts Festival 2016

The Visual Arts Center (VAC) at Nye Beach, Festival headquarters 

It's time to save the weekend of April 22-24 for a great time playing with all kinds of paper projects in the beautiful coastal town of Newport, Oregon. This year's Newport Paper & Book Arts Festival promises to be one of the best ones ever with seven classes each day to choose from. Offering 12 one-day classes, 3 two-day classes, and 1 three-day class there is bound to be something to inspire every book and paper enthusiast. The official schedule with registration materials will be mailed out sometime in the next month, but we were able to get a sneak peek of the list of classes and instructors.

New Year's WOW

Let's kick off 2016 with an original WOW creation from Margaret Beech, our NORBAG member who lives in York, England. Dolores Guffey will stand in for Margaret to teach the workshop. It is a double-sided concertina with WOW explosion folds on both sides and decorated with a multitude of circles in vibrant colors. This structure can be made in any size and with any type of punch designs. ALL papers will be provided--you just need to bring your creativity.

Materials to Bring:

• Your imagination
• X-Acto knife or Craft knife
• Scissors
• Cutting mat (or magazine or phone book on which to cut)
• Small paper punches (there will be some to share at the meeting). Circle punches in various sizes from 1/4" to 2" as well as any other punches in any shapes in these sizes.
• Bone folder
• FRESH glue stick (there will be a lot of gluing)
• Waste paper for gluing
• Glue rag with a small container for water to keep the rag damp
