CRISS CROSS ACCORDION BOOK

Twenty-seven years ago this month NORBAG was established and we are still going strong. Congratulations and happy anniversary to everyone for continuing to keep NORBAG a valuable book art organization.

Our September workshop will be a Criss Cross Accordion Book taught by our member from Victoria, B.C., Mary Conley. This is a great sculptural book with a real WOW factor when opened.

Materials:

  • Four (4) pieces of cardstock 4" x 12"
  • Two (2) pieces of cardstock 4" x 9"
  • pencil
  • eraser
  • ruler (preferably metal)
  • glue stick
  • Xacto or craft knife
  • cutting mat
  • bone folder
  • scoring tool
  • ribbon closure
  • spine piece 4.25" x 1" bookboard or mat board
  • Two (2) covers 4.25" x 6.25" bookboard or mat board
  • paper to cover the outside of the book 16" x 6.25"
  • paper to cover the inside of the book 4 1/8" x 13.5"
  • Two (2) pieces of book/mat board 4" x 2" glued together
Important: the grain of the papers and boards must run in the same direction.

Optional:

  • A strip of mat board 1/2" wide by 12" long
  • A jig to trim the corners of your cover paper. The pattern is in the newsletter.
Mary reports that she has found both these items to be very useful tools in book binding.

Here's an idea from Mary of how you can expand on this Criss Cross structure to make a very sculptural holly pop-up.

POP UP AND OUT REDUX

Our August workshop taught by Kit Davey gave us a great new structure to feature ATC's (Artist Trading Cards) or any decorated card. The book we made had space for four "pop out" cards but you could make it to feature just one card or many more. Our book did not have an additional cover, but Kit demonstrated how to add a cover with a spine for books with more pages. Thank you Kit for introducing us to this new structure. Here are some examples of the books we made.

Michele Kamprath

The plain background pages show off Michele's painted cards.

Michele's beautiful covers.

Cheri Aldrich used her collaged papers
for the book pages and the cards.

In this photo you can see that if one more page
was added on the left, the book would form a star
shape in the middle.

Cheri's great collages are featured in this structure.

Margaret used a different color combination
for each of the four page units.

POP UP and OUT BOOK

Book artist Kit Davey will show us how to make a "Pop Up and Out" book at our August workshop. It's a fun, interactive book. When you turn the pages, a card pops up and out of the structure. The book is designed to contain artist trading cards or playing cards (2 1/2" x 3 1/2"). Kit asks that you plan to embellish your cards before or after the class, as she will focus on making the book to contain them during the workshop.

To see more of Kit's work, go to her website:

her Instagram page.  www.Instagram.com/daveykit

Tools Needed:

  • Scissors
  • Exacto knife and cutting mat
  • Pencil with eraser
  • Ruler with metal edge
  • Bone folder
  • Liquid glue, such as PVA, Modge Podge, Elmer's
  • 1/4" and/or 1/2" wide brush, water container, and rag
  • Optional: double-sided tape

Materials:

You must cut out the materials in advance of the class! There will not be time to cut things out during class.

For the pages:

  • Eight (8) pieces double-sided (with a pattern or color on both sides) cardstock, 4" x 6"

For the cards:

  • Four (4) pieces double-sided cardstock 2 1/2" by 3 1/2" -artist trading card size/same size as playing cards. Note: We will NOT be embellishing them during the workshop--please plan to do that before or after the workshop.
