If you've ever tried to follow Keith Smith's directions for sewing structures, but found them confusing, you're in luck because Michele Kamprath is coming to our rescue. She will show us a variation of the long stitch journal described in Keith Smith's Non-Adhesive Binding Vol. 1. This is a great journal to use or to give as a gift. The journal size Michele will teach is 7 1/2" tall. If you prefer to make a shorter version either 5 1/2" or 6" tall, you will be able to adapt your journal sewing pattern to match the size difference during our workshop.

For the cover:

Use a heavy weight paper like a 140 lb. watercolor paper if possible. It needs to be a paper that is sturdy but still able to fold. Decorated or colored paper will be best. Maybe you have an old painting lying around or want to get out your brushes and play? The cover should be 7 1/2" tall x 13 1/2" wide (grain short if possible). This will allow for a pocket turn-in on the cover. If you do not want a pocket turn-in, your paper would be 11 1/4" wide.

For the signatures:

We will be sewing eight signatures into our cover. Using text weight paper, you will need about 48 pieces (six per signature) that would fit into a 3/4" spine area. If your paper is heavier, you will need less than 48 sheets. Signature paper size: 7 1/2" tall x 10 1/4" wide grain short if possible.

Note: Please cut cover and signatures ahead of the workshop time. Please weight your signatures overnight if possible so they will fit neatly into your spine area.

Tools Needed:

  • Pencil and eraser
  • Ruler
  • Piercing cradle or phonebook
  • Awl
  • Waxed linen or embroidery thread to match cover
  • Beeswax if needed for unwaxed thread
  • Needle (wide-eyed like a tapestry needle)
  • Bone folder
  • X-acto or other cutter
  • A piece of paper for your sewing jig: 7 1/2" tall x 3" wide
  • optional tools: small needle-nosed pliers and tweezers

Making a collection of Belly Bands was the project for the June NORBAG workshop taught by Dolores Guffey. First we made a simple one signature pamphlet stitched book to use as the model for our bands. Next, Dolores led us through making a series of eight different bands from a very simple wraparound one to a more decorative interlocking origami style band. 

By displaying several different books, she also showed how belly bands can be used to hold a book closed, but they can also give a hint as to what the reader will see inside. It was a very informative workshop and I suspect we'll be seeing many more exchange books with different belly bands in the future.

An example of just how creative our members can be with "on the fly" ideas, Margaret Beech shared her idea of folding simple pockets into her model book to hold each of the different belly bands. What a perfect way to keep all the bands in one place to use as prototypes for future books.

 Our books often need a little something to hold them closed when they are not being read. Dolores Guffey will show us how to make ten different styles of belly bands at our June workshop. The plan is for us to first make a simple five-hole pamphlet stitch book with a soft cover and text weight paper. This book is for us to take notes and jot down instructions on how to make each of the bands. Dolores suggests that we use papers from our stash for these prototypes.

Dolores says "I will guide you through making the belly bands. The book you make will be used as an example of a book that needs a belly band. After making one band, you will remove it and then the next band will be made. At the end of the workshop, you will have one book and 10 different belly bands."

Materials List: 

  • Please have your papers cut prior to the workshop!

  • 1 (one) piece 8-3/4" x 7" light weight cardstock, or decorative paper of similar weight, grain short. This book is a prototype, it does not have to be expensive paper.
  • 6 (six) pieces of text weight paper 8-1/2" x 7", grain short
  • 8 (Eight) pieces 11" x 1-1/2" of light weight cardstock, (grain short) or any paper stronger than text weight paper that can be easily folded around a book. These will be the belly bands.
  • 2 (two) pieces of 19" x 1-1/2" (belly band paper, see previous bullet). Note: you can glue two strips of paper to make a 19" strip.
  • 1 (one) piece  5" x 3/4" mat board or cardboard strip
  • Toothpick & brads (optional)

Other Supplies:

  • Pencil
  • Piercing tool or T-pin
  • Metal ruler
  • Craft knife
  • Bone folder
  • Scissors
  • Piercing cradle (or thick magazine or phone book)

The May workshop taught by Sandy Vrem was a great success despite the problems she had with her Internet connections. Many thanks to Sandy for staying with it while maintaining her cool. The original gallery book structure is perfect for displaying small pieces of artwork, but we learned that with simple changes we could create even more ways to display photos or papers.

The Newport Paper and Book Art Festival (NPBAF) celebrated its 25th anniversary (a year late) in April. It was very well attended by 18 NORBAG members, including four who were also instructors (Donna Gephart, Dolores Guffey, Margo Klass and Sandy Vrem). Every one of the 19 classes offered had at least one NORBAG member in attendance. To view a short video showing scenes from the festival through the years, visit:

There was a wonderful art exhibit at the Visual Arts Center that featured work by many current and former festival attendees. Works by several NORBAG members were included. A 50-minute video tour of the exhibit, hosted by Cheri Aldrich and Sandy Williams, is worth seeing. video will be available until the end of May.
