FLAG BOOK WITH PULL-UP ENVELOPES

Our February 2024 valentine month workshop will be a wonderful little flag book with many envelopes to hold messages or small pieces of art. Our instructor will be Kris Nevius. Templates and paper suggestions for the envelopes and inserts will be sent when you register.

SUPPLIES FOR CLASS:

  • Accordion Cover: 2" x 18" grain short
  • Envelopes: 6 envelopes for inside of the book and, optional, 1 or 2 more for the front cover and inside or outside of the back cover.
  • Inserts: one for each envelope
  • Belly Band: 5/8" x 8 1/2"
  • Envelope folding guide: (on the envelope template page) and insert guide (on the insert sheet)
  • Thread: 8" or so for each envelope. Waxed linen is good.
  • Attachments for pull string: beads, at least 2 per envelope. Or use a 3/8" circle punch or 3/8" square punch to punch out 2 circles or squares per envelope. Or just cut out small squares.
  • Tools: scissors, Exacto knife, ruler, pencil, cutting mat, awl, bone folder, corner rounder, glue stick or other glue to glue the envelopes, scrap paper to glue on.

PLEASE DO THIS BEFORE STARTING TO MAKE THE BOOK

Print out:

  • Envelope template page onto cardstock or acetate
  • Insert page onto cardstock or heavier scrapbook paper or the like. Add content if desired.

Cut out:

  • Accordion cover paper: Mi-Teintes works well for this.
  • Envelope template and envelope folding guide
  • 6-8 envelopes, using envelope template. Use a paper that will fold easily, but not tear easily. Kris used paste paper done on Arches Text Wove.
  • Inserts: 6-8. Use a corner rounder on all 4 corners if desired.
  • Insert guide (on insert page)
Keep envelope template handy for reference during class.

When:  Saturday, February 10 at 10 a.m. PST
Where: On your computer, tablet or smartphone via Zoom

A WOW FROM MARGARET!

Since we, and most of the world, are staying home in hope of flattening the curve of coronavirus cases, this blog will strive to offer some comments on activities as well as projects from some of our members. We will try to update the blog every two weeks, so be sure to check in for new ideas as well as information about when regular NORBAG workshops will resume.

Our member from York, England, Margaret Beech, has always generously shared her ideas with us. Margaret takes simple structures and elevates them into beautiful works of art. If you subscribe to Bound and Lettered magazine you’ve probably seen some of Margaret’s projects. Below we offer Margaret’s version of a WOW fold and an envelope to go with it. She encourages you “to make something, pop it into an envelope and mail it to a friend as a Random Act of Kindness during the current time of national crisis and social isolation.”

This WOW fold uses a 20 cm square of paper and fits exactly into a 10 cm square card. (U.S. measurements would be 8" for a 4" card, however any size square will work and just adjust the card accordingly.) Margaret says, “I am not suggesting you should make anything very sophisticated — just something that will fit into an envelope to be mailed. You may prefer just to make a square greeting card with a square of your own decorated paper on the front. Or a square card with a tiny envelope on the front, perhaps with a tiny card with a cheer up or greeting. I would encourage you to make your own greetings cards generally. I always have a store of them (birthday, get well, thinking of you, sending love, new home etc.) and can honestly say I have not bought a commercial card for over thirty years –think how much money I have saved! And you could too!”

The WOW structure fits exactly into the card so Margaret suggests
for an 8" WOW you might want to use a 4.5" square card.

Thank you Margaret for sharing your worksheets with us.

PAPER POCKETS BOOK

This Paper Pockets Book was created by Greta Baack and will be taught by Diane Williams at the workshop on April 11. Diane explains the project as a "book with 10 pages made from #10 security envelopes (size 4.12" x 9.5") or any envelope this size can be used for this project. The envelopes must have their flaps which must be sealed. Envelopes will be provided at the workshop. Envelopes can be colored, painted, covered or stamped to decorate them.
Sometimes you will get them in your bills as return envelopes. I recycle these for my book pages. If the envelope has a window you can use it as long as you can cut in 2.75" from the end of your sealed envelope.
Decorative paper may be used to cover the chipboard book cover or you may decorate it with stamps. The pockets in our book are large enough to hold business cards, artist trading cards, school photos or whatever your creative mind thinks up to put in the pocket."
Please RSVP to Diane (see sidebar in the newsletter for her contact information) by April 5.
