2015 Valentine Card Workshop

A sampling of the many Valentines created for Lorraine's generous give-away

Please join me on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14th for an afternoon of making beautiful, original valentines. They will be given to people receiving the Senior Nutrition Program home delivered meals, participants at the senior lunch sites and people living in our local board and care homes.
Feel free to bring your own supplies (suggestions are listed below). I will have card stock, stickers, etc. for your use...along with some munchies! A perfect way to celebrate Valentine's Day by sharing your creative talents with people who will definitely appreciate the cards they receive from you. If you are unable to come to the workshop but would like to give me some cards, please contact Lorraine (see newsletter).

Materials to bring:
♦ Miscellaneous papers suitable for valentines
♦ Paper doilies
♦ Ribbon, lace, and other adornments
♦ Bone folder
♦ Scissors
♦ PVA glue / glue stick
♦ X-acto knife and cutting mat
♦ Stamps and stamp pads

Valentine's Day at the Kiosk

Along with blue skies in Humboldt County, love is in the air! Are you looking for inspiration for handmade Valentine Day cards? The kiosk at the Eureka branch of the Humboldt County Library is featuring a selection of cards from years of February card exchanges by the North Redwoods Book Arts Guild. If you cannot visit, the photos below will give some idea of the range of artistic approaches. 

 

January Workshop: Expandable Journal

This journal allows you the flexibility to add and/or delete signatures at will, because each signature is individually sewn onto the straps and not attached to any other signature. The covers are made of Tyvek which you will paint at the workshop. The painted Tyvek has a leather-like appearance; the color choice will be yours.

RSVP IS NECESSARY in order to have the covers available. RSVP to Dolores Guffey no later than January 6th by email or phone (see Newsletter).

Materials to Bring:
● Signatures: 12 sheets of 8-1/2"; x 11" text weight paper cut in half (8-1/2" x 5-1/2") ahead of time so that you have a total of 24 pieces 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" to bring to the workshop
● Cutting mat
● Metal ruler
● X-Acto or craft knife with new blade
● Scissors
*● Piercing tool and Piercing cradle
*● #2 Crewel needle
*● Acrylic paint (favorite color for cover)
*● 2" Paint brush & paint rag or paper towels

Our Annual Winter Gathering

It's once again time for our annual winter gathering and card exchange. This is the one meeting of the year when we don't have a workshop. It is a time to celebrate and enjoy. Everyone is invited! You do not have to be in the exchange to come! Please bring a (not too gooey) finger food to share and come hang out with your Norbag friends.

We won't have the library at the gathering, but there will be a box so you can return any books you may have checked out.

We will meet at 12 noon on Saturday December 13 at Sandy V.'s house (not our usual meeting place!). Please check your printed newsletter for directions. (And thank you Sandy for once again graciously being our host!)

Workshop on November 8th with Judy Detrick

We had a wonderful time learning how to decorate capital letters, and it isn't just coloring in the blanks! The hardest part was learning how to "puddle" the watercolor or gouache and move the color around without letting the brush actually touch the paper. 

Here are some of our working models. 

November Workshop: Lettering

DECORATED CAPITALS WORKSHOP with Judy Detrick
A time-honored way of capturing viewer attention and setting the stage for what’s to come is with a colorful decorated capital. In this workshop you will work through the stages of drawing your capital letter, applying a design motif to it, tracing it, and transferring it to its final destination. You will learn several layout tricks to position your capital in just the right place, although standing alone is fine, too. Then you will learn painting techniques with watercolor or gouache to bring your capital to life in full, living color.

October Workshop: Gone Batty

Bat Book Workshop with Edge Gerring 

This month, in honor of Halloween, we will create a Bat Book. When folded, it will be 5" long. When opened, there is a tab that opens his eyes. The tab is attached to a slender poem, a little card—whatever you would like.

Tools to bring:
● Glue Stick (Edge will bring Aleene's Quick Dry Tacky Glue to share)
● 1/4" hole punch (Edge will bring one to share) ● Scissors
● Pencil
● Bone folder

Materials to bring:
● Paper : 6" x 12" minimum size. MiTientes or light card stock for bat, thinner paper for inner color (optional).

● 1-1/2" wide strip of paper for accordion fold piece, or small paper that will fold to 1-1/2" wide. 

What will be provided:
● Pattern
● Instructions 
● Velcro dots.
