FLAG BOOKS & BIMA EXHIBIT

Flag Books are a favorite structure of Carol DuBosch and now they might also be favorites of those of us who attended her workshop. First she demonstrated her technique for making a flag book and then she shared many of the books she has made using that structure. Some of her books had as many as 50 or 100 flags! Thank you Carol for sharing those wonderful books with us.

Sherrill Story sent in a few photos of the flag book she made after the workshop.

Cloth, Paper, Stitches is the title of the current exhibit in the Sherry Grover Gallery at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) on Bainbridge Island, Washington. This exhibit has been up since July 3 and will end on September 20. Here are photographs of some of the books in the exhibit. These books, from the extensive collection of Cynthia Sears, showcase "processes such as sewing, weaving, cutting, and folding. These works expand the idea of the book beyond a purely visual or text-based object into something materially intimate and physically engaging."

SINGLE IMAGE FLAG BOOK

Flag books are very eye-catching and often contain several different images. But they can also be a great structure to use for a large single image. Our November workshop will feature a fish named Arowana and an instructor named Edge Gerring who will show us how to create this single image flag book. Edge will provide an image of Arowana but you can use any image that will fit on the 5" x 11" background.

Materials

Edge will provide:  Instruction sheet and Arowana image
These will be emailed to you upon RSVP.

Participants need:
  • Pencil and metal edged ruler
  • Scissors, cutting knife and mat
  • Bone folder (scoring board and scoring tool are optional)
  • Glue: PVA, Elmer's, Tacky or extra strong glue stick
  • One (1) piece background card stock 5" x 11" grain short - or any paper that will take 1/2" accordion folds well.
  • One (1) copy of Arowana (or your similar sized image) on cardstock
  • Two (2) covers: stiff board 1 1/2" x 5" grain long
  • Two (2) cover papers 3 1/2" x 6"
  • Optional: paper, cord, ribbon, etc. for a belly band
Here are a couple more images to give you an idea of how this structure goes together.

FLAG DAY 2018 TRIBUTE

In celebration of Flag Day, June 14th and Independence Day, July 4th, members of the North Redwoods Book Arts Guild have displayed flag and star structure books in the Humboldt County Library kiosk. Included are single and double flag books made with photographs, watercolor paintings of local landscapes, artwork, butterfly prints, and a signal-flag message.  Star books included feature tunnel pages, pockets, cut outs, recycled book pages, poetry, educational, artistic, and entertaining formats representing Matisse, Frida Kahlo, and other creative varieties.

“...a fold has two sides, each going in a different direction.
If a flag is pasted to one side of the fold,
it will lie down heading in one direction; if pasted to the other side,
the flag will lie pointing in the other direction.”

The flag book structure was developed in 1979 by Hedi Kyle.

e Star Books f
Star Books come in a variety of structures which form a star shape.
Variations include
“ a triple layer accordion fold book,” “two sets of signatures... bound together with spacers...” and
“three layers of concertina folds, with cutouts, sewn together on the fore edge” and other star folds.
