Randi Parkhurst's lovely embellished papers

Our May Meeting will be with Randi Parkhurst, who will be teaching a Paper Embellishment Workshop. At this point in time, the classes are filled but there is always a possibility of a last minute cancellation if you would like to be on the waiting list. Please contact Dolores Guffey for inquiries.

We would like to extend an invitation to our members to attend the meeting and book exchange from noon until 1:00pm on Saturday, May 10th. Randi will have her incredible structure "Patience" which she will share during this time. To see a video of "Patience" go to vimeo.com/7694315 , but better yet, come and see it in person. Newport Paper Arts Festival Recap & Book Cloth Demos

Fabric Book Cloth by Michele
In lieu of a workshop this month, we will have "Demonstrations" and a "Show & Tell" from our members. Michele Olsen will demonstrate how to make your own Wheat Paste Book Cloth, a method she learned at the Focus on Book Arts Conference last year from Tim Ely. Tim, who has one foot in the Middle Ages, uses wheat paste to make his book cloth. He likes to use old-fashioned techniques to create materials for his books and this method has been used for centuries. Michele likes it because the paste saturates the fabric and provides a bit of protection for the surface. Wheat paste, water, thin paper, glue brush, and fabric are the basic supplies. This book cloth is very easy to make, materials are readily available and non-toxic. Demonstration will include handouts on "recipes" and lots of tips.

Dolores Guffey will demonstrate another method of making book cloth by using fusible interfacing to bond fabric to a paper backing.

Norbag members who attended the Newport Paper Arts Festival will bring their creations from the following workshops: Origami Temple; Polymer Clay Journal Cover and Pen; Naturalist's Woodland Journal; Coiled Baskets with Paper Cord; Experimental Paste Papers; Silk and Plant Fiber Fusion Paper and Beaded Fiber Cuff; Miniature Book Box with Compartments; Leapin' Leporellos; Pochoir:The Art of French Stenciling; and perhaps a few more.
